Images and screenshots you check
When you run a check, the image or screenshot is sent over an encrypted connection to our relay server and on to Sightengine, the third-party detection service that produces the score. The relay exists so that the detection service's keys never live inside the app. Neither the relay nor we keep a copy of your images; Sightengine processes them under its own privacy policy.
The app keeps a short fingerprint of each image on your phone so that checking the same picture twice doesn't use your monthly quota again. The fingerprint can't be turned back into the image and never leaves your device.
Screen capture and the overlay
Screen capture only happens when you trigger it, from the bubble, the quick-settings tile or the share sheet, and Android asks for your permission each time before a screenshot is taken. Nothing is captured in the background, and the app never records video.
The "draw over other apps" permission is used only to show the floating bubble and its menu. The app can't read what other apps display; it only sees the screenshot you choose to check.
Optional account
If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your email address, display name and a Google account identifier, stored through Firebase Authentication and Firestore (services run by Google) so the app can recognise you and remember a premium status across devices. Signing in is optional: every detection feature works without an account.
Bug reports
If you send a bug report from Settings, we receive the description you write, your device model, Android version and app version, any screenshots you attach, and your email address and user ID if you're signed in. Reports are stored in Firestore and used only to fix problems.
Data kept on your phone
Detection results, History thumbnails, monthly usage counts, cached scores and your settings (theme, launcher icon, tutorial state) are stored only on your device. They are not backed up to the cloud by the app and are removed when you clear the app's data or uninstall.
Advertising
The current version of OverlAI shows no ads. If a future version introduces ads through Google AdMob, this policy will be updated first, and where the law requires it you will be asked for consent before any personalised ad is shown.
Deleting your data
Delete individual History entries in the app, or everything by clearing the app's data or uninstalling. If you created an account, delete it from Settings, under Account, and your authentication record, email, user ID and premium flag are removed immediately. You can also email us from the address you signed in with; see delete your account for the steps.
Permissions the app asks for
- Draw over other apps: the floating bubble.
- Screen capture: asked each time you check what's on screen.
- Notifications: the "overlay is on" notice and quick-check results.
- Internet: sending images for analysis, and the optional sign-in.
The app doesn't ask for your location, contacts, microphone, camera or files beyond the image you pick to check.
Children
OverlAI is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
